Solar Feed In Tariff Review Results

March 21st, 2011

The results of the fast track review of feed in tariff for large scale solar installations have been released and it is bad news for large solar developers.

The DECC has proposed reduced rates for three new tariff bands as follows:

  • >50kW – ≤150kW: 19p/kWh
  • >150kW – ≤250kW: 15p/kWh
  • >250kW – ≤5MW: 8.5p/kWh

The proposal is open for consultation until 6th May 2011 after which point the changes will be finalised. It is expected that the new rates will take effect from 1st August 2011.

The reason the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) called for the emergency review was due to concerns that large scale solar farms would take up too much of the FIT budget thereby diverting funds from community and householders, the people and scale for whom the FiT scheme is intended.

At the same time, FiT rates for Anaerobic digestion (AD) have been increased to encourage uptake of farm scale AD plants.

Renewable Heat Incentive Revealed

March 15th, 2011

The Government has revealed the tariff structure for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme, due to come into effect this summer.

The scheme is similar to the Feed-in tariff scheme for electricity where owners receive annual payments for energy generated by renewable technologies.

Here is a summary of the RHI scheme:

  • Biomass boilers installed to heat individual domestic properties will not be eligible for the RHI. The Government aims to bring forward proposals for domestic customers that will apply from 2012 onwards.
  • The incentive payment will be paid to the owners of biomass heating equipment for a period of 20 years. (Compared with 15 years under the previous proposals.)
  • The RHI applies to all commercial buildings, community buildings, public sector buildings, industrial users and groups of houses.
  • Projects installed after July 15th 2009 will be eligible for the RHI.
  • For installations below 1MW there are two different tiers of payment. A higher payment for the first 1,314 hours of operation each year (15% of annual load) and then a lower payment for any kWhs produced after this.
  • For installations above 1MW there is a fixed rate of payment based on heat produced and annual reports on the sustainability of their feedstock will be required
  • All installations will require to be heat metered. (The deeming approach previously proposed has been discarded.)
  • ESCO projects will be eligible for the RHI. These provide a no capital outlay option for clients.
  • The incentive payment will receive an RPI uplift each year.

RDES welcomes the RHI scheme as it makes renewable heat projects more financially viable. We look forward to assisting clients in the installation of renewable heat technologies to cut down Scotland’ s CO2 emissions,~ 50%of which come from heating.

Major New Renewable Energy funds for Scottish farmers

February 18th, 2011

A major new fund to help Scottish farmers develop renewable energy projects in rural areas was announced on the 15th February 2011.

This scheme is designed to cover the risk of the pre-planning stage by offering loans of up to 90 per-cent of the costs, providing there’s a minimum community benefit from the project. This is in addition to the Feed-In-Tariffs and the proposed Renewable Heat Incentive.’

The funds will be available through CARES (Communities and Renewable Energy Scheme) from April.

As yet, details have yet to be finalised but interested parties can submit an expression of interest here: http://www.communityenergyscotland.org.uk/cares.asp

Contact RDES to find out more about how you can maximise the benefit of this and other incentive schemes.

Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme Gets the Green Light

November 12th, 2010

Good news! It was announced as part of the spending review on the 20th October that the RHI scheme will go ahead in June 2011. This means that people with renewable heat generating technologies such as ground source heat pumps and biomass boilers, installed after the 15th July 2009, can enjoy the financial benefits electricity generators have with the Feed- in Tariff.

The RHI is open to individuals, businesses and community groups, paying a tariff for each kWh of heat generated by renewable technologies. To maximise the benefits of the RHI scheme, now is the time to look at installing renewable heating technologies in your building or community.

Contact us to find out how to make the RHI work for you.

RD Energy Solutions attends Renewable UK Conference and Exhibition

November 9th, 2010

RDES attended the Renewable UK Conference and Exhibition from the 2nd to the 4th of November 2010 at the SECC in Glasgow.  We shared a stall with our sister company Renewable Devices Swift turbines, showcasing  our broad range of service offerings and meeting with people to discuss their individual requirements.

The conference had 4,200 attendees and featured 200 speakers and 300 exhibitors, reflecting the current scale of interest in renewable energy technologies. We found the event very interesting and informative, it is exciting to watch the industry grow so rapidly and we are proud to be a part of this growth.
